The major difference between Emerald and its direct predecessors is the inclusion of the Battle Frontier: a competition area on an island far out to sea that you can only travel to after having beaten the Elite Four. This area acts as a place to show off your team and engage in a variety of battles that put an interesting twist on the standard formula, including battles where you rent Emerald from a limited selection or where you leave your team to fight it out on their own, relying solely on their nature and move preferences to get them through.
