Players are required to combine certain numbered boxes to form the final result of 2048. This game can be considered a sliding block puzzle. 2048 is played on a 4 × 4 board. On it are several boxes of different colors that shift when the player presses the four direction buttons on the keyboard. The box can move as far as possible until it meets another box or edge of the board. If the two same numbered boxes join when shifting, they will join and produce a new box whose number is the sum of the numbers in the two boxes that joined earlier. This new box cannot join other boxes in the same direction. The box with the highest number emits light around it. In each shift there will be a new box numbered 2 or 4 that appears randomly on the empty space on the board. The scoreboard on the top right continues to update the player's score. The player's score starts at zero, then increases when two boxes join and form a new numbered box. Like other arcade games, the player's best score is displayed in conjunction with the current score. The new player wins when a box number 2048 appears on the board. After reaching the target score, the player can continue playing in sandbox mode past the 2048 number. When the player cannot move anymore (there is no empty space and the same numbered box around him), the game ends.
